Jonathan Wooding, Reader in Church History in the School of Theology, Religious Studies and Islamic Studies at University of Wales Trinity Saint David Lampeter Campus, has been made a Patron of Churches Tourism Network Wales. Other patrons include Dr Barry Morgan (Archbishop of Wales), Ann Beynon (BT Director of Wales), and Professor Terry Stevens (international tourism consultant).

Dr Wooding has played a central role in providing education for church guides and in the transfer of knowledge between academia and the heritage-tourism industry across the last decade. He observes that:

“A religion and theology graduate in the 21st century should be prepared for employment with skills in interpreting faith for an increasingly mobile and multi-cultural society. The Faith Heritage industry is vital for the future of Wales – especially rural Wales”.

John Winton (National Director of CTNW) added:

“Dr Wooding has been a great support to CTNW in the eleven years since its inception. His knowledge and understanding of the historical context in which our places of worship are placed has been a great benefit as CTNW seeks to help these places plan their interpretation for 21st-century visitors.”

Dr Wooding, along with his late colleague Professor Nigel Yates, led a team of scholars in producing the Guide to the Churches and Chapels of Wales, published in May 2011 by University of Wales Press.
