Anthology Aims to Provide an International Flavour

22.12.2010

An anthology celebrating the experiences of international students has been published by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

Dominic Williams of Iconau with Bevin O’Connor and the anthology Bold Moves Bold Moves was produced by Bevin O Connor and Christina Jenkins, two students from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York State who have been studying at the University’s Carmarthen campus as part of their degree courses.  The collection includes the work of fellow students who are either studying in Wales from another country or who are studying at one of the University’s international partner universities.

The anthology includes poems and prose written by the students and according to Bevin, who also edited the collection and who has been a regular reader at the Poems and Pints evenings held at the Queens in Carmarthen: “This anthology of student writing celebrates the liberating and exciting aspect of studying abroad . . . Bold Moves offers insight into the world of study abroad through both poetry and travel logs.  These first hand experiences reveal the bravery and personal growth each student has shown by making a “bold move”.

Bevin and Christina spent their internship with Ferryside-based publishing and marketing company Iconau to produce the anthology which will now be used by the University to promote the opportunities to other students.

A competition was held for the best entry into the anthology and Edward Messiah, a BA Outdoor Education student, scooped the prize.  Edward is currently studying for a semester at Telemark University in Norway, and will be returning to the University in the New Year.  His prize was collected by course director Dr Andy Williams.

Kevin Matherick, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Studies said “We have developed study abroad programmes at the University for over 30 years and have welcomed 1,500 students from the United States to the Campus in Carmarthen.  In recent years more of our UK based students are also taking part in study abroad opportunities with our partners in the USA and Europe.  The not only gives students an international perspective on their studies, they develop professionally and personally through the experience”.
