Youth Work
Youth Work is a profession at the heart of supporting young people. It involves providing opportunities and activities to help young people build upon their talents and abilities, and to develop their personal and social skills. Youth Work:
-
supports young people in their transition from dependence to interdependence;
-
assists their personal and social development through a predominantly non-formal education process and seeks to engage them in lifelong learning;
-
enables them to have a voice and influence in the services provided for them
- is a universal service open to all young people; and
-
promotes equality of opportunity.
Youth Work has its own set principles and values, and is concerned with the non-formal, informal, and formal education and learning opportunities of young people aged between 11-25 years old. The relationship that a young person has with their Youth Worker is quite unique as it is based on the voluntary attendance principle. As a consequence, it is very different to the relationship they would have for example with a teacher, social worker, or even with a parent.
