John continues to be involved in the key Youth Service networks in Wales which bring him into regular contact with the Principal Youth Officers’ Group, Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, CWVYS, Young People’s Partnership Co-ordinators, Young People’s Framework Co-ordinators.

During the last 19 years John has gained an in-depth knowledge of community based learning through being involved in the writing and development of a wide range of relevant policy documents including:

His contemporary knowledge of the national and international aspects of community education is also enhanced by his role as Associate Editor of Youth and Policy a publication devoted to the critical study of youth affairs and youth policy and youth work in the UK.

For the past 20 years John has maintained a link with youth work practice through his role as Chair of North Ely Expeditions a voluntary organisation working with young people between the ages of 15-25. This has involved him working with young people in a range of activities including for example overland trips and community aid projects to Morocco, Turkey, Sicily, Kenya, Outer Hebrides, Austria, Ireland and expeditions to the USA.

Academic Interests

John’s research interests are varied – history of Youth Work in Wales, monitoring and evaluation of the outcomes of youth work programmes for young people, link between policy and practice in the Youth Service context, non-formal learning as a complementary activity to formal education, development of an e. Library for the Youth Service in Wales, development of a National Research Centre for Youth Work in Wales
