BA Social Inclusion

What is Social Inclusion?

The UK Social Exclusion Task Force (2009) defines social exclusion as ‘the complex and enduring problems that cut people off from the sorts of happy and productive lives that most of us take for granted... Understanding who experiences (the risks of social exclusion) and how they impact on the lives of individuals and families is vitally important for improving public services’.

The Welsh Government makes social justice and inclusion a priority, placing policies that address social inclusion, strengthen communities and promote equality at the centre of its response to globalisation. It states,

Wales needs strong, resilient and harmonious communities that can respond effectively to the increasing pace and scale of economic, social and cultural change in the 21st Century. (Welsh Assembly Government, November 2009, page 3)

Therefore the issue of Social Inclusion, and how to tackle the Social Exclusion of disadvantaged groups in society, remains high on Welsh, UK and European political agendas and has become increasingly recognised as an important area with its own educational and research requirements.

What will I study?

The BA Social Inclusion examines issues of inclusion relating to groups often marginalized in society, for example, disability, ethnicity, gender and ageism. It is a unique programme that responds to the crucial need for professionals working with groups and individuals in social, educational and administrative settings to have a broad knowledge and understanding of social inclusion and the issues this presents to society in the contemporary era. Recent developments, such as ageing populations, youth unemployment, community regeneration, globalisation and sustainability, have come to the fore of both the Welsh and the UK political agendas. What is more service delivery has seen a revolution in approach, with person-centred planning and user and carer involvement emerging as central to sustainable communities.

Therefore during the course of your studies you will engage with debates about how to challenge social exclusion, gain a critical knowledge of Welsh and UK policies aimed at promoting social inclusion, and develop a thorough understanding of inclusive professional practice.

You can chose from four clear pathways through the degree programme. These pathways will offer you a Single Honours programme which responds to the changing world and, at the same time, reflects the Welsh and UK Government agendas on issues surrounding social exclusion and its related policy framework.

The new pathways within the programme will be:

  • Additional Needs
  • Communities, Families and Individuals
  • Health and Social Care
  • Inclusive Education (Flexible Learning Route at Level 6)
