Bilingualism and the Welsh language
You certainly don't have to be a Welsh speaker to join the School of Early Childhood- we accept students from all over the world and celebrate and value that diversity. Students on the BA EYE who have no Welsh at all (or very little) are given an opportunity in the second year to learn some Welsh for use with children. You will learn songs and phrases and the language of play and fun. This will give you a bit of an edge when it comes to employment as Welsh language development is an area of learning in the Foundation Phase 3 - 7 in Wales.
The School of EYE also offers a specialist Certificate of Higher Education in Welsh and Bilingual Practice in the Early Years (Level 4) for those wanting to develop some Welsh language skills for work with young children. This programme is part of the Geiriau Bach project which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
We have a clear policy of enabling students to study through either Welsh or English, Wales' national languages. We also actively promote bilingualism and aim to include all our students in a love of the Welsh language and culture.
