Creative Writing

Creative Writing is an increasingly popular subject at degree level and beyond.

Not only does it support students in developing their passion for creative expression into successful writing – and we encourage and equip our graduates to publish their work - but independent writing projects require both flexibility and sustained, self-motivated research: excellent training for a wide range of working lives.

MA Creative and Script Writing

Good clear writing is an invaluable skill in a world awash with reports, from teaching to management.

A focus on the ability to communicate clearly through precise language prepares students for a range of careers, from writing-based advertising or journalism, to related professions such as publishing, publicity or arts administration.

Creative Writing is well established at Trinity Saint David: the MA in Creative Writing was set up in 1997 and modules at undergraduate level introduced the following year. Joint and single honours programmes soon followed. In 2002 an MA in Creative and Script Writing was introduced as  the support of PhD’s in Creative Writing. There has been an annual student-produced anthology of MA work since the beginning and we have built practical advice on publishing, design, marketing and reading tours into this production and the BA programme. As a result of this mentoring several former students now work in publishing and we are proud of our track record of student publishing success – at least one a year.

The Centre for Creative Writing, based on the Lampeter Campus of Trinity Saint David, has three resident writers:

Dic Edwards(www.dic-edwards.com) internationally recognised playwright and poet

Menna Elfyn (www.mennaelfyn.co.uk), author of over twenty books of poetry, as well as children’s novels and educational books, numerous stage, radio and television plays, and libretti for US andUK composers

Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch (www.rhydderch.com) Picador published poet as Writing Fellow

These writers are supported by a range of professional, academic and visiting writers.

The quality of the work associated with the Centre can be seen in the journal, The Lampeter Reviewwhich publishes the work of international writers, such as Edward Bond, Steven Birkoff and Phillip Gross, alongside that of students.

Staff from the Centre and The School of Cultural Studies encourage students to take a full and active part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities including the University Festival [as link],Readings, and Poems and Pints events.
