Summer Workshop in Greek and Latin

About

The Summer Workshop in Greek and Latin welcomes participants from Britain and overseas who are interested in learning the languages of the Classical World. Modules are open to all: whether you come to prepare for a course or degree, to improve or keep up your language skills, or simply because you have always wanted to study a classical language but never had the opportunity. Each year many people of all ages and backgrounds come to Lampeter to attended the Workshop – last year around 110 students from 10 different countries joined us. The Summer Workshop in Greek and Latin 2012 will take place from the 29th July to the 11th August.

Learning

We offer high quality intensive language teaching at all levels. In addition to the daily 3 hours of tuition, students spend time in private study to prepare for the classes. All teaching takes place in small, friendly groups with highly experienced staff. You can take either one- or two-week modules. Please note that in the second week the modules assume that you will have done the first week of our summer school (or the equivalent elsewhere).

If you can only come for a week and have no previous experience of the language, please come in the first week. If you wish to come during the second week of an Intermediate-Advanced or Advanced module, please have a look at the text that will be studied, as the text studied in week one will be continued in week two.

Due to the intensive nature of our modules it is not possible to take two modules at the same time. The exception is the prose composition class which can be taken in addition to the advanced Latin or Greek class. You can, however, take one language in the first week and another in the second.

It is important that you are placed in the right class for your level of ability and proficiency so please give as much information as possible about your previous experience when completing the application form.

Modules

Modules at all levels of learning are offered from complete Beginners' to Advanced. Visit our Modules section for more information.

Group Size

In order to ensure the quality of our teaching for each module, groups will usually contain no more than 15 students.

Age

The Workshop accepts students aged 16 years onwards; there is no upper age limit. Students of secondary school age (13-15 years) are welcome to take part provided that an accompanying adult takes the same course as the student. We are sorry that we cannot accept younger children. Students under the age of 18 who are staying in university accommodation during their stay will be placed in a hall supervised by a Hall Warden.

Certificate Option

All the two-week modules offered during the Workshop are fully accredited by the University and can be taken as a single module or as part of a larger programme. Those students who are attending for two weeks and are willing to sit two one-hour time tests can gain a University of Wales certificate for their studies if they wish (subject to eligibility). Arrangements to take the certificate will be made once you have arrived in Lampeter.

Many students take the certificate simply because they would like to measure how much they have progressed over the fortnight. It is a good idea to consider taking the certificate option if you are about to apply for a university programme, if you attend the summer school as part of your continuing professional development, or if you would like to enhance your CV in general.

Accommodation

The course is available on either a residential or non-residential basis. All accommodation is in single en-suite study bedrooms on campus. Meals are self-service in the main refectory on campus. Please use the application form to tell us about any special dietary requirements or disabilities you may have.

Please be aware that there are a number of steps and staircases on the campus. We advise applicants with severe mobility issues to contact us so that we can, to the best of our ability, make sure that suitable accommodation and teaching rooms are allocated.

The main University library may be used for reference and reading. In addition, a common room with dictionaries is available in the main teaching block, and free internet access is available for the duration of your stay.
