Marcus Rainsford. An historical account of the black empire of Hayti. London, 1805.
Marcus Rainsford (1750-1805) fought in the American War of Independence and served with the Duke of York in the Netherlands. In 1799 he visited Santo Domingo, and met Toussaint L'Ouverture, the black rebel leader and later governor. Rainsford was arrested and condemned to death as a spy, but was later reprieved and eventually set free. L'Ouverture, a former slave, drove the British, French and Spanish from the island but was subsequently betrayed and died in a French gaol.
