Students visit Lesotho in Southern Africa

14.10.2011

Last month, 8 students from the School of Initial Teacher Education and Training at Trinity Saint David, Carmarthen campus carried out teaching practice in primary schools; whilst 4 students from the School of Early Childhood attended placement in preschools. They were accompanied by their lecturers Anne Loughran and Eileen Merriman and Dr Jane Booth from the School of Social Justice and Inclusion.

Lesotho is a mountainous kingdom, completely surrounded by the country of South Africa and experiences many of the same health and economic challenges as any third world country.

TSD Students who visited Lesotho

This was the third visit to Lesotho by students from the University, and this year, a link was made between Y Gamfa Wen (the University's day nursery) on the Carmarthen campus and preschools in Lesotho. Children in Y Gamfa Wen created pictures for the students to take to the preschools in Lesotho as a gesture of friendship and support towards their understanding of Global Citizenship.

The students also attended talks on the history, culture and education in Lesotho as well as having language lessons and visiting a Save the Children orphanage and a School for the Blind.

Eileen Merriman said:

"This was an experience of a lifetime for our students. Life in Lesotho is so very different to what we are used to in Wales. Everything they saw and did while they were there will help them learn and grow as people - and as future teachers and nursery workers."

Note to Editor

  1. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is working with Swansea Metropolitan University, Coleg Sir Gâr, Pembrokeshire College and Coleg Ceredigion to create a dual sector university. This means that the institutions will work as a group to provide progression routes and choices for students as well as programmes of study that respond to the needs of employers in the region.
