Celebrating the Benefit of Higher Education

08.06.2011

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David opens up its campuses to the public for Universities Week 13-19 June 2011.

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is celebrating the benefit of higher education this week by taking part in Universities UK week (13-19 June 2011).

We will be getting involved with activities highlighting the links and relationships that the university has with the people and businesses in our local communities.

During this week, we will be hosting the BA Fine Art Degree Exhibition on the Carmarthen campus, an Organ Recital at St Peter’s Church, Carmarthen (16 June) and a concert, (16 June) at the University Chapel on the Carmarthen Campus.

These events are part of Gwyl!:The University of Wales Trinity Saint David Arts Festival and it is once again set to provide a magnificent month of music and drama in west Wales throughout June.

Our Schools and Colleges Liaison Officer will be out and about at UCAS conventions in Staffordshire (June 14) and Merseyside (June 15/16) talking to students and teachers about what the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has to offer.

We will also be hosting a special event (16 June) to celebrate our Leverhulme Visiting Fellows with a talk by Dr Alexander Meeus from the University of Leuven and a Leverhulme Visiting Fellow at the School of Classics on the Lampeter campus.

And the Creative Writing department at the University in conjunction with Swansea University and the Dragon Innovation Partnership is holding a day of workshops, discussions and readings.

Featured are prize-winning poet, Menna Elfyn, and brilliant new writers, Roshi Fernando and Tracey Warr. James Hawes warns about the perils of adaptation, based on his own, sometimes bitter experience, while Mick Felton (Seren) talks about the future of publishing in the digital age.

There's also a one-woman show by Sian Price, a book launch showcasing new work by students, and plenty of sparkling conversation.

These events aim to highlight how universities benefit everyone, whether or not they have gone to university themselves. It will see higher education institutions around the country take part in a variety of local, regional and national activities designed to demonstrate the extraordinary, life-changing work of universities. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Medwin Hughes said:

“Universities Week is an excellent opportunity to showcase some of the fantastic work we are carrying out here at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David. It’s also a great chance to invite people to experience university life first-hand, whether they’ve been to university themselves or not.”

Universities Week 2011 will focus on five key themes including the value universities bring to their communities, the value they bring to local businesses and how the research currently underway will benefit UK society in 20 years’ time.
