Trinity Saint David Graduate Lynwen Haf Roberts in Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s first musical
23.02.2011
Lynwen, a recent graduate from Ysgol Theatr, Cerdd a’r Cyfryngau – the Welsh medium School of Theatre, Music and Media at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David - will in March take one of the leading roles in 'Deffro'r Gwanwyn' a Welsh translation of the hit musical Spring Awakening based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 German play.
'Deffro'r Gwanwyn' is a gritty and honest story about a group of teenagers dealing with the anguishes of adolescence and sexual awakenings, repressions and hormonal chaos, whilst the adult and authoritative characters around them attempt to maintain discipline and Victorian decorum, ill-equipped to offer the youngsters any enlightenment or guidance. For some of the young characters, their experiences change their lives forever, for others, their curiosities lead to devastating consequences.
The musical 'Spring Awakening' first opened its doors on Broadway in 2006, and since then it has received rave reviews worldwide and has won 7 Tony Awards in New York and 4 Olivier Awards in London, with the energetic and irreverent ‘grunge’-style music score appealing to young audiences in particular. This Welsh adaptation 'Deffro'r Gwanwyn' will be an exciting development for the national company therefore.
Lynwen says:
“I’m having the best time. This is our third week of rehearsals and we get on well as a cast. I’m very lucky to be part of such a renowned company as the Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, and the fact the Spring Awakening is one of my favourite musicals is a bonus!
“It’s also great to be working at the Llwyfan. It means that I’ve come ‘home’ to Carmarthen, for a while, at least and can pop in to the University and see old friends and tutors,” concludes Lynwen.
Iestyn Llwyd, Head of Ysgol Theatr, Cerdd a’r Cyfryngau adds:
“We take great interest in the successes of our students and follow their unfolding careers with immense pride.
“The University’s commitment to the cultural, creative and performing arts is renowned, as is the calibre of our talented and gifted graduates. The performing industry is an extremely competitive and hard industry to survive in at the best of times, this is proving even more apparent during the current economic climate and the effect it has had on the Arts in Wales in general. It is indeed heartening therefore to see the talents of recent graduates like Lynwen still coming through, and getting some important exposure on a national stage.
“It is equally pleasing to see several past-students appearing on S4C’s current Sunday night drama ‘Alice’. Despite the challenging times within the creative arena, there are still opportunities to be grasped performing in the nation’s theatres, concert halls and on the TV screen. One shouldn’t forget the opportunities to contribute behind the scenes either for directors, scriptwriters, editors, technicians and administrators.”.””
The National Theatre of Wales tour of 'Deffro'r Gwanwyn' kicks off on 9 March 2011 at Y Llwyfan, College Road, Carmarthen. For tickets, call 0845 226 3510. More information on www.theatr.com
