University of Wales Trinity Saint David Announces New Provosts Appointments

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has named Professor D. Densil Morgan, Head of the School of Theology, Religious Studies and Islamic Studies and Mr Gwilym Dyfri Jones, the Dean of Faculty of Education and Training as the new honorary provosts of the University.

As provosts of the Lampeter and Carmarthen campuses respectively, they will represent the Vice-Chancellor in public and academic matters, facilitate activities on campus and develop links between the university and the local community.

Professor Morgan a native of Morriston, was educated at the universities of Bangor and Oxford and has written extensively on religion in Wales and on the work of the Swiss theologian Karl Barth. Among his publications are Wales and the Word: Historical Perspectives on Welsh Identity and Religion (2008), The Span of the Cross: Christian Religion and Society in Wales, 1914-2000 (second edition 2011),  The SPCK Introduction to Karl Barth (2010) and Barth Reception in Britain (2010).

His volume on the nineteenth century religious leader Lewis Edwards was long-listed as the Welsh Arts Council book of the year in 2010. Professor Morgan has been Head of the School of Theology and Religious Studies since 2010. Previously he was Professor of Theology at Bangor University and Head of the College of Arts and Humanities there.

Professor Morgan said:  ‘I’m very conscious of the challenge which is associated with this new role, and I am keen to strengthen campus life in all ways possible. It’s also a great privilege to be able to develop our links with the community. The university is evolving daily, and I envisage that the Provost will have a key position in ensuring that all future developments benefit us all’

Mr Jones hails from Aberystwyth and was educated at the Universities of Bangor California Berkeley, USA. He completed the PGCE course at Aberystwyth University, prior to taking up the post of Welsh teacher, and subsequently Head of the Department of Welsh at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, Gowerton.

Mr Jones was appointed Senior Lecturer at Trinity College, Carmarthen in 1992, and the Head of the Department of Welsh in 1997. Two years later, he was appointed Head of the Education and Training Faculty and with the creation of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David Mr Jones was made Dean of Faculty. Mr Jones is also responsible for developing Welsh medium education within the University. 

 “As I embark on the role of Provost on the Carmarthen campus, I am very aware of my responsibility to maintain, promote and celebrate the distinctiveness of the campus. Both the Trinity campus in Carmarthen and the Saint David campus in Lampeter have their unique character and culture and here at Carmarthen, we have a long and respected Welsh tradition. My role as Provost will be to ensure that the cultural, linguistic and Christian heritage is honoured within the new University as the new it will play a distinctive role within the context of the creation of a confident, extrovert, bilingual Wales. 

Professor Medwin Hughes, Vice-Chancellor of the University said:

“Both Professor Morgan and Mr Jones bring extraordinary academic and administrative experience to the new leadership positions at the University. Their achievements as scholars and educators and their commitment to student success will bring new vivacity to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

“Higher education is experiencing a period of great change and we are ready to accept the challenge this will present. We are already working with Swansea Metropolitan University and the further education colleges of Coleg Sir G­âr, Pembrokeshire College and Coleg Ceredigion to create a dual sector university that will bring new opportunities. The honorary appointments of both Professor Morgan and Mr Gwilym Dyfri Jones as Provosts as part of our collegiate model will enable us to grow and develop our academic profile as well as contributing to the economic and cultural well being of the communities we serve.”
