Ysgol y Preseli pupils gain University credits for out of school hours learning
06.12.2011
22 Pupils of Ysgol y Preseli are gaining credit for their out of school hours learning.
In recent months, many of the school’s extra-curricular activities have been registered as modules within the Children and Young People’s University Cymru. The scheme rewards pupils’ participation in activities that occur outside normal school hours through awarding them with credits – one credit per hour.
The credits accumulate until the young people achieve sufficient credits to gain bronze, silver or gold awards.Catharine Bleasdale, Co-ordinator for Mid and West Wales Children and Young People’s University says that the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is proud to be involved. She says:
“The scheme rewards youngsters for their commitment to a wide range of activities, and promotes the idea of university as a viable option for all through the use of terms such as module and credit. It is great to present awards to children and young people who have demonstrated their dedication to extra-curricular clubs.”
At Preseli, a wide range of clubs has been registered as part of the scheme. Children participating in activities as diverse as the Glee Club and 5x60 sports are collecting CU credits.
Mr. Michael Davies, headteacher at the school, is very supportive of the scheme. He says,
“The school has been linked with the Children’s University for the past two years and the number of modules we have been registered for has increased year on year.
“Students are made aware that as they become involved with clubs, societies and activities they are able to gain accreditation for their efforts.” Mr Davies wishes to congratulate all those pupils who have achieved accreditation and thank the teachers and support staff for providing the pupils with a range of opportunities”.
