Isis Subtitling Training Centre

In 1989, a Subtitling course was developed at Lampeter, with the support of S4C (Channel Four Wales) and Trosol, a translating agency. This was done with the intention of training professional subtitlers and to promote the skill in this field.

The University has recently purchased new state of the art digital sub-titling software ( Isis) from Starfish Technologies. We are pleased to announce that Starfish has appointed the University as an Isis authorised training centre, which will enable the University of Wales Lampeter to maintain a technological advancement in the field of live, closed subtitling.

Future developments will include live subtitling (Voice recognition) , subtitling for DVD authoring and Audio Description.

At present the Unit at Lampeter is recognised as one of the main subtitling centre in the UK. The courses provides training in the subtitling of television programmes from Welsh into English for bilingual students and English into English for film and media students, and Welsh into Welsh for the Welsh Department students. The Centre for Continuing Education at the University, offers intensive screen translation courses for bilingual students from other European countries as well.

All the Welsh Department coursework is assessed externally by S4C, and the resulting qualification is an University of Wales Lampeter and S4C Qualification in Subtitling (Teletext),
