Lampeter Campus
Orientation Schedule
Orientation and the Beginning of Term
Things will probably seem a bit confusing when you first arrive. This is why we recommend that international students attend the Orientation and Welcome days, which take place in the few days before the beginning of term (i.e. before most of the Lampeter students have come back). These days aim to give you an idea what life on the Lampeter Campus is like, as well as familiarize you with the University, the academic system and to show you a bit of the surrounding area.
What happens during Orientation?
Orientation is usually during the last week in September: you will be informed of the exact dates and sent a programme of activities in plenty of time. A typical Orientation period includes a few lectures, a tour of the University, discussion sessions about living and studying in Lampeter, a sightseeing excursion and plenty of free time to do your own exploring. We will also provide a welcome pack including bedding and cooking essentials.
Term starts officially on the Friday at the end of Orientation Week. The first week of term is called Freshers' Week: "Fresher" is the name given to a new university student. During Freshers' Week the Students' Union organizes lots of parties and other activities so that people can get to know one another.
The first Saturday of term is Reception Day when new students (often with their families) have a chance to look around the University and town. Administrative staff are available to answer enquiries about accommodation, health matters etc.; academic departments are also open for information.
On Sunday there may be activities and social events organised by your departments, staff from the Finance Office will be available to handle financial enquiries and fee payments.
If you had to get a visa to enter Britain (i.e. if you are not from a member state of the EU or the Commonwealth), your visa will probably state that you are "required to register with the police". If it does, go to Lampeter police station within seven days of arrival. They will provide you with a Certificate of Registration (or "Green Card"), for which there is a charge.
What about fees?
If you are a fee-paying student you are required to deposit with the Finance Office a full session's fees in advance (i.e. at the very beginning of term). If you are staying more than a year, you should also provide suitable assurances of your ability to cover the continuing cost of your course.
If your fees are to be paid by a sponsor, you should bring a letter from the sponsor confirming this.
