National University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day

Join us to mark University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day. University Mental Health and Wellbeing Day aims to focus efforts aimed at promoting the mental health of people who live and work in Higher Education settings.

The Day has come about as a result of an initiative undertaken by UMHAN, but other organisations are encouraged to contribute to the Day. The intention is that this will become an annual event, and that in time all those who have the potential to influence student mental health will come to see the value of contributing to its success.

We’ve all heard of eating 5 fruit and veg a day to keep us physically healthy, but what about doing 5 things a day to help us stay mentally healthy?

5 simple steps incorporated into daily living can improve mental health and contribute to a more productive and fulfilling life. The "5-a-day for mental health" is inspired by the think tank "Foresight" - commissioned by the Department for Innovation, Business and Skills - which states that both mental capital and wellbeing could reap very high economic and social benefits in the future.

Mental health promotion initiatives targetting the thousands of staff and students within a University can lead to improved insight into how people and their communities can build tolerance, maintain health, and strengthen a partnership approach to mental health. In addition Mind will be holding a talk/discussion on the Lampeter campus on suicide awareness at 11am and there will be a mental health awareness quiz in the afternoon at 1pm.

The 5-a-day are a positive, practical way of embedding mental wellbeing into University settings.

The 5-a-day are:

  1. Connect with the people around you
  2. Do something active.
  3. Take notice of the world, catch sight of the beautiful, remark on the unusual.
  4. Learn something new.
  5. Do something nice for a friend or stranger.
