Islamic Studies and Religious Studies
About the Course
Islamic Studies and Religious Studies is offered as a joint honours programme. The course will provide you with the opportunity to study many aspects of Islam, in both historical and contemporary contexts. Like other academic areas, Islamic Studies applies analytical and critical approaches to its subject area. A range of options allows specialised work in such fields as Islamic primary sources, Shari'ah, Arabic, Islamic philosophy, and Islam and Christianity in dialogue. The Islamic Studies Joint programme offers students the opportunity to explore Islam and the theoretical study of religion using the techniques of anthropology, phenomenology, psychology, sociology, theology and empirical study. It familiarises students with the specifics of Islamic traditions as well as enabling comparisons to be made between the beliefs and practices of various religions.
As well as being a fascinating subject in its own right, Islamic Studies has relevance for those wishing to pursue careers in fields such as education, social services, media, diplomacy, or business.
