This MA engages you in debate about drama and theatre during the twentieth century to today and their relationship to wider society. Community and Popular theatres, Revolutionary Drama, Theatre and the State and British drama are the key study areas and there is the opportunity to write a dissertation on a topic arising from the course. The MA is taught through seminars and tutorials and the degree is awarded upon successful completion of four modules and a dissertation.
The Programme – Modules include
British Drama – explores dramatists’ presentation of Britain as a changing social and cultural entity from 1900 to today- Drama and Revolution – examines the development of a repertoire of revolutionary drama and theatre from a range of countries and decades of the twentieth century
- Theatre and Community – explores key movements and philosophies of theatre’s role as social, popular and moral entertainment
- Theatre and the State – examines theatre’s relationship with the State through issues such as censorship, funding, opposition and identity
- Dissertation – an opportunity to develop your own research project that engages with issues and debates that arise from your studies

Who is this designed for?
- Those who have recently graduated, or are about to graduate, in areas such as Drama/Theatre-based courses, Acting, English Literature/Film/Media, History and other cognate subjects
- Those who are currently working in fields such as drama/theatre and wish to develop their skills and qualification levels

The MA can be studied on a full-time basis for one year

Postgraduate Qualifications
Study modules are credit rated (30 credits at M Level per module) and can be used to obtain the following qualifications:
- Postgraduate Certificate in Theatre and Society – 2 taught modules – 60 credits
- Postgraduate Diploma in Theatre and Society – 4 taught modules – 120 credits
- MA Theatre and Society – 4 taught modules and a dissertation – 180 credits

Programme Specification
Educational Aims
The aims of the programme are to:
- investigate the nature of modern drama and theatre as social and cultural phenomena;
- assist students in the development of an independent, informed and analytical approach to research;
- generate an informed perspective on the capacity for social and aesthetic influence demonstrated by modern drama and theatre;
- provide students with the opportunity to pursue an appropriately structured and intensive reading programme in the subject area;
- assist students in articulating, through critical debate and scholarly writing, knowledgeable, considered and well-expressed viewpoints on a range of significant dramatic and theatrical topics;
- enhance transferable skills of research, interpretation and critical evaluation.

Subject Knowledge and Understanding
The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the following areas.
- Cultural, historical and social contexts of modern drama and theatre.
- Dramatic texts and their relationship to cultural, historical and social factors.
- Social, political and educational uses of drama and theatre.
- A specialised topic of investigation selected by the student for dissertation study.
Subject-specific skills
The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate the following subject-specific skills.
- Analyse dramatic texts and forms of theatre practice.
- Utilise electronic research tools and databases.
- Plan, conduct and structure a substantial research project.
