MA English TEFL
Overview of the Programme
The English language is increasingly recognised as the global language in commerce and all areas of global social and cultural interaction.
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David has a well-established record of research and teaching in English Language programmes at foundation, degree and masters level. This programme draws on specialist staff with expertise in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and has been designed specifically for students of Humanities and related disciplines who would wish to pursue a career as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language or to broaden their own understanding of English Language.
This residential programme, offered on the Lampeter campus of the University, enables students to study at an advanced level a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) qualification while improving core research skills.
Module Content and Structure
The MA English (TEFL) is vocationally focused. It provides students with a grounding in the Teaching of Grammar and the Acquiring of Assessment Skills, and in the Theories and Methodologies of Teaching English as a Foreign Language; it also provides the necessary skills to prepare and deliver courses in English as a Foreign Language and to design assessment tools and practices. Core to the programme is an initial observation of classes in EFL, and a substantial period of observed and mentored Teaching Practice in a Placement provided as part of the programme.

In Part II of the Programme all students undertake a Dissertation on a topic of their choosing. This may be theoretical or practice based.
Mode of Study
The programme may be followed full or part time and qualifications at postgraduate diploma and postgraduate certificate level are also available.
Assessment
Assessment is through course work. This includes: essays, tasks designed to enhances research skills, preparation and delivery of class room materials.
Entry Requirements
In line with the Admission Policy of the Faculty of Humanities, applicants will normally be expected to have achieved at least a 2:1 degree in English Literature or a cognate discipline (those with a 2:2 may be considered for entry to a Postgraduate Diploma in the first instance). Non-standard applicants will also be considered.
Career Development
This programme has been designed to enable students to follow a career in the expanding area of Teaching English as a Foreign Language; it could also lead to further study in their area of specialism, which might include TEFL management. It has also been designed to equip them for future employment with the advanced research, information handling and writing skills sought by many employers in the public and private sectors.
