MA Classics
Overview of the programme
The MA in Classics has a strong focus on linguistic attainment in both Greek and Latin, incorporating aspects of advanced-level language acquisition and textual interpretation.
The MA in Classics programme contains a substantial language element and offers advanced language study in one language with the requirement to take a second classical language at an appropriate level.
Module Content and Structure
Part I of the programme enables students to explore the literatures of Greece and Rome, working with Greek and Latin texts, both prose and verse, in the original.
This solid textual foundation is supplemented by a 20,000-word dissertation in Part II that will enable you to apply your linguistic skills to an extended study of a literary work.
Mode of Study
This programme is available for full-time or part-time study, on the Lampeter campus for residential students, or via Distance Learning, or a mix of both. It has two commencement dates, one in October and the other in February.
Assessment
Modules are assessed in a variety of ways, including translation exercises, textual commentaries, and exams.
Entry Requirements
The traditional requirement for entry onto a Level 7 programme is a 2.1 or 1st class undergraduate degree. In addition, the School encourages students with an equivalent and appropriate professional qualification or significant and relevant professional experience to apply.
Linguistic skills at advanced level in at least one of the classical languages are a prerequisite for this degree scheme. Students who do not have a classical language at advanced level can use the Postgraduate Diplomas in Greek or Latin as pathways into the Master’s degree.
Career Development
The programme provides a broad foundation for postgraduate work, by laying particular stress on the methodologies and research tools needed for independent advanced study, thus acting as training for students who intend to undertake an MPhil or PhD.
The course also provides a professional qualification in advanced Greek and/or Latin for teachers or others seeking Continuing Professional Development.
