Many pupils in Welsh schools have a natural advantage when it comes to learning languages, as being bilingual they find it so much easier to learn languages. Both primary and secondary schools which have introduced Chinese language and culture have been enthusiastic about the way our teachers have transported their pupils into another world and another culture. Dyffryn Taf school recently said of the Lampeter CI:
‘This is an excellent relationship defined by a competent and charismatic tutor.’
The Confucius Institute has been working to develop programmes that suit the needs (and the pockets) of each and every school. Schools can choose from a variety of packages that best suit their needs:
Regular weekly teaching by one of our qualified, professional Chinese teachers, with activities that are mapped on to each of the Key Stages of the National Curriculum, and which take into account the ages and abilities of pupils.
China Day or China Week features a team of teachers who come to the school and deliver an exciting programme of activities from making dumplings, paper cutting and calligraphy to language role plays and watching Chinese films.
Welsh Baccalaureate module: Wales, China and the World. For 6th formers who would like an introduction to basic Mandarin, this module gives them the preparation they need and provides a stimulating short course as part of their Welsh Bacc activities. The course can be delivered throughout the term or as an intensive 5 day basis, with the option of a two day residential on the Lampeter Campus.
During the residential we offer lectures and workshop-type sessions on a variety of topics, for example:
- Language and calligraphy
- Chinese youth and youth culture
- Food in China
- Chinese religions
- Contemporary society
- Chinese history
