About Us

Located at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David Lampeter Campus, and soon to have a presence on the Carmarthen Campus,  Wales’ first Confucius Institute has made a definite mark on the provision of Chinese language and culture in Welsh schools since its inception just over three years ago.

Newcastle Emlyn Secondary School pupils finish their on campus residential on a high note

Seventeen schools across Wales now have active links with Chongqing schools; Mandarin has featured in regular classroom activities for twelve local primary and secondary schools; and for two consecutive years students have had a fantastic opportunity to stay for two weeks  in the free language and culture Summer Camp in Beijing.

Funded by the Chinese Language Council International (known as Hanban), the role of the Confucius Institute is to enrich people’s lives by providing opportunities for both young and old to experience Chinese culture and to learn Mandarin. Much of our work is in schools, where our Chinese teachers provide a wide range of activities from China Days, where pupils can have a go at making dumplings, participating in a traditional tea ceremony or trying their hand at calligraphy, to more formal Chinese lessons. We now regularly deliver Chinese language modules for 6th formers taking the Welsh Baccalaureate, and provide short intensive courses via on-campus residentials.

Confucius Institute activities enrich our undergraduate programme through a wide range of cultural events, for example Summer Camp in Beijing, Chinese language competitions and student scholarships for study in China.

Currently the University of Wales Trinity Saint David is the only university in Wales that offers full degree programmes (BA, MA, PhD) in Chinese Studies. Click here for more information about  what we offer schools…
