Dr. Andy Williams is the director of the Centre for Outdoor Education Research. He has been involved with outdoor learning for over twenty five years and has taught in higher education in Australia and the UK.
His research interests focus on the nature and meaning of outdoor education teaching and learning and the study of outdoor education as cultural practice. He is the programme coordinator for the MA Outdoor Education and BA Outdoor Education (Single and Joint Hons) degrees.
He retains an active coaching role in mountaineering, rock climbing, kayaking and caving and a passion for scrambling. He has published articles in the UK and abroad and is an Accredited Practitioner of the Institute for Outdoor Learning, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a non-executive of the European Institute for Outdoor Adventure Education and Experiential Learning.
His current research interests include the constructed nature of student learning, the impacts of a solo experience and a DADS widening access project in the local community.

Dr Louise Emanuel is Programme Co-ordinator for undergraduate and postgraduate Tourism programmes at Trinity and is based within the School of Computing, Business and Tourism.
Her area of teaching relates to Impacts of Tourism, Sustainability, Policy and Planning and Landscape. In addition to her experience of research and teaching within Higher Education at Trinity, and previously, UWIC, she has also has experience of working within local government in planning and the voluntary sector in community development.
She has several years experience of Project managing EU funded projects and her research interests include landscape perception and community development and has acted in a consultancy role to the public and voluntary sectors relating to these areas.
Current research projects include a study of perceived landscapes of outdoor education activity.

Bill has worked all of his adult life outdoors. Academically has a Post Graduate diploma within Outdoor Education, A certificate in Education, is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
He holds the highest national level coaching and examiner qualifications for kayaking and surf ski (level 5) and mountaineering (MIC). He is a level 4 canoe coach /examiner, level 3 sea coach / examiner and Swift-water River Technician SRT (Advanced).
In addition he holds the International Mountain Leaders Award and is both a WCA and MLTE contracted course provider. Drawing upon his expertise many National Governing Bodies have utilised Bill’s skills and he acts as Membership Secretary of British Association of International Mountain Leaders & member of the White Water Safety and Rescue Committee of the Welsh Canoe Association.
He has been a head of centre and LEA outdoor education advisor as well as running his own business (WLA).
He provides technical support and advice for more than 60 organisations throughout the UK and has led expeditions to many countries including the French Alps, Norway, South Africa, Ireland, Canada, South China seas, USA, Caribbean, Chile and Peru.
Amongst other things he is currently jumping out of planes. More than qualifications and experience, Bill has a love and passion for the outdoors. You will regularly find him out paddling the surf, getting to grips with his new play boat, enjoying the pleasures of open boating, rock climbing, skydiving, mountain biking or just strolling in the hills with his wife.

Alison Connaughton is a full time lecturer in the School of Sport, Health and Outdoor Education and has taught in higher education in the UK for the last eight years.
She leads a range of modules on the Sport, Health and Outdoor Education Courses, mainly those with a psychology focus.
Her involvement in professional organisations includes being a member of the BPS (Graduate Basis for Registration), a member of BASES and she is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research interests include motivation and barriers to sport and exercise.

Nalda Wainwright is subject co-ordinator for Physical Education in the school of ITET. She has worked in the primary sector as a mainstream teacher, associate advisor, and in charge of a special needs unit.
She is chair of the Association for Physical Education (AfPE) in Wales and works as a consultant and National Trainer for the Sports Council for Wales as part of the Physical Education and School Sport Project.
Nalda teaches on modules related to outdoor and adventurous activities linking this work to the National Curriculum. Research interests include the impact of physical learning on children’s access to all learning.
Current projects include lead consultant producing a professional development module on Inclusive Physical Education (with a particular emphasis upon outdoor education) for teachers in Wales and Masters Dissertation for MA Education in Society. She is an avid surfer, snowboarder, triathlete and walker.

Graham leads the International Programme in Outdoor Education and manages the Resource Base at Trinity College.
He is a qualified teacher with over 20 year’s experience of working in the outdoors and has managed outdoor education departments within mainstream and special schools.
Through his involvement with young people on the fringes of society and those excluded form education, Graham’s professional focus has been on the development of “alternative curriculum” opportunities and the promotion of resilience skills via the medium of outdoor education.
He has worked extensively as a freelance instructor throughout the UK, Europe and South East Asia. With a specific interest in personal and social development through journeying, he has led expeditions in the French and Swiss Alps, Patagonia, Canada, Honduras and Thailand. He holds BCU level 4 coaching awards in canoeing, sea kayaking and surfing, level 3 kayak and level 2 competition.
Holding mountaineering and climbing qualifications, he was until recently an active member of the British Mountaineering Council’s Youth and Training Committee and the Home Valley Mountain Rescue Team.
He is also a swift water rescue technician, with considerable experience of leading groups in caves and mines and a trained mountain bike leader. Graham is looking forward to the opportunity to gain Accredited Practitioner Status of the IOL and to commence studying on the MA course later in the year.

Bill Krouwel is a senior lecturer in outdoor and experiential learning in the Centre for Outdoor Education Studies. Following a career in HR management, he moved into outdoor learning in the early 1980s, and has facilitated outdoor-based programmes for adults and young people across Europe and in Singapore and the United States.
His research interests focus on the outdoors as a medium for human development, and on the interface between the outdoors and other potentially developmental media including the arts, theatre and music.
He teaches on the MA Outdoor Education and BA Outdoor Education (Single and Joint Hons) degrees. He has a very active interest in designing and delivering programmes which reflect his research interests, and in the interface between activity and reflection.
He has published books and articles in the UK and abroad and is a Fellow of the Institute of Organisational Learning and a Chartered Secretary.
His current action research commitment includes open-outcomes development programmes for managers and the British contextualisation of the Czech Dramaturgy approach to mixed-methods development training, of which he is the leading UK advocate and exponent. He is an active designer of development exercises.
