Inclusive landscapes for children and young people

Di Collins

In many areas of the UK children and young people have been ‘designed out of the landscape’ by the layout of open spaces, rules and regulations and the attitudes of local residents and representatives of authorities. In some areas where once children and young people would congregate to ‘hangout’ or kick a ball around they are now faced with the risk of facing an ASBO (Anti Social Behaviour Order).

This presentation draws on action research in progress. The background to changes in patterns of use of public open spaces by children and young people will be investigated. In the light of this, work undertaken with children and young people to enable them to design accessible and inclusive landscapes that are exciting and challenging will be highlighted. The implication of this for us as outdoor educators will be explored.
