Location and Facilities

Located close to the river Towy the Centre for Outdoor Education Research at Trinity University College is ideally positioned as a base to study and play in the outdoors. The University lies between the coastal splendour of the cliffs, crags and beaches of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park to the west and the rugged upland terrain and cave systems of the Brecon Beacons National Park to the north. To the east lies the Gower Peninsula, designated the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK in 1951, and the haunt of climbing and surfing enthusiasts alike. To the south lies the sea and opportunities to sail and sea kayak as good as anywhere in the country whilst Carmarthenshire itself boasts numerous excellent rivers for inland kayaking and canoeing as well as the Brechfa and nearby Afan Argoed Forests for mountain biking and the Cambrian mountains for remote and challenging expeditions and camping.

On campus facilities include a kayak training pool, new (January 2007) indoor climbing wall and the most extensive collection of books and journals dedicated to outdoor education in any library in Wales. The Students Union also runs its own Outdoor Pursuits, Kayak, Caving and Surf clubs who organise regular day and weekend trips as well as longer expeditions. In addition, local opportunities to participate and develop skills in the outdoors are locally accessible through a number of local organisations including: Llandysul Paddlers; Pembrokeshire Watersports, Brechfa Mountain Bike Centre, Towy Sailing Club, Twr y Felin and the South Wales Caving Association.
