Why Study at the School of Archaeology, History and Anthropology?

Lampeter is a lively, historic market town set in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains in the county of Ceredigion.

Our campus is situated in the middle of town, and hence all shops and amenities are located within easy walking distance. Lampeter offers a variety of unusual, independent shops, together with student-friendly cafés and pubs that provide everything you need on a day to day basis. Students quickly bond and find a sense of community on campus and within the local towns and villages. This region has some of the lowest crime rates in Britain, offering safety, peace of mind and stunning rural countryside.

About the Campus

Pembrokeshire coast Lampeter is a Transition Town. This means that as a region we are working towards self-sufficiency, especially as regards the development of renewable energy. We aim to develop a vibrant local economy which is not dependent on fossil fuels.

Lampeter is a centre for organic food, much of it grown locally and sold in the local shops and restaurants.

The Lampeter and Carmarthen campuses are in easy reach of walking and hiking areas, including the Brecon Beacons to the east and the spectacular Ceredigion coast and beaches to the west.

The Welsh coast has been named the ‘best place on earth to visit’ by Lonely Planet guides, and on 5th May 2012 the 850 mile All Wales Coastal Path will be opening.

An Outstanding Research Department

Fieldwork in Isluga Chile opt

All our staff are experts within their research fields, and we are supported by a vibrant international research environment. 50% of the School's research was deemed to be of international quality during the last Research Excellence Assessment and 15% was World Class, positioning the school amongst the top in terms of research. This means that your lecturers are not just telling you about other people’s research—we are telling you about our own discoveries. You will be able to join us in our research, for instance excavating at the medieval abbey of Strata Florida or working abroad in Cyprus or Peru.

Interdisciplinary teaching

We will teach you the background that you need to know for your chosen discipline, but we will also teach you to weigh up evidence, to think and to express yourself more coherently. Our programs introduce themes which cross over the boundaries of the separate disciplines; this will broaden your thinking and help you to think outside the box.

Direct contact with your lecturers

All students are given direct contact with lecturers outside of normal lecture hours, for instance you can share a coffee with staff in the campus Starbucks. The smaller, compact campus allows us to quickly get to know our students, so that you are not just a face in the crowd. Your personal tutor will be there for you, to discuss any problems or ideas you may have.

Facilities

Dedicated computing labs and high speed campus wifi will keep you in touch via the latest technology. Enjoy getting out into the field and taking field trips to various locations from your first term here. Practical and lab-based workshops are offered.  Rare manuscripts held in the Roderic Bowen library are available to study and a free bus service is provided to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth every week.

Employability

Our courses equip you with a wide range of useful transferable skills to ease you into the job market with a good head start. Why not take advantage of our work placement learning modules during your study?
