Academic Interests

I am at present writing my PhD thesis about The Beltane Fire Society, Edinburgh.  The theme is about notions of membership and belonging, created/established through ritualised performance, to what is a very transient community.

I also have a broader interest in issues relating to community, (particularly those of rural Wales), which include the integration of minority groups; the ageing rural community; rural sustainability; local heritage and the protection of local ‘traditions’, language and festivals/customs.

I hope to set up a research project connected to the universities Strata Florida Project that studies Archaeology staff & students who undertake annual excavation at the site.  This project will investigate whether this activity establishes greater bonds between the staff and students (thus perhaps creating a small community) and what effect (if any) this has upon the student’s further study with the department.  Part of the research will also investigate the impact the annual ‘pilgrimage’ has on the local population.

I have a growing interest in the importance of putting anthropological theory into practice, particularly with the student cohort at the university.  I wish to consider whether the undertaking of modules (at all undergraduate levels) that provides the ‘practice’ of being an anthropologist helps to develop an understanding of what it is to BE an anthropologist.
