Academic Interests

My expertise is based in the field of geoarchaeology with particular interests in the nature and processes responsible for sequence development in the Holocene and Pleistocene in lowland river valley and shallow marine areas. My work is focused on issues related to palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, palaeogeography and methods and techniques to help in the prediction of areas of archaeological interest. This work in principally focused on south east England (Thames Valley and Sussex Coastal Plain) but includes work in Northern Europe, Turkey and Lebanon. Other fields of interest relate to the development of integrated techniques for archaeological evaluation meshing geotechnical, geophysical and sedimentological approaches to aiding landscape reconstructions.

Recently completed projects include the English Heritage Aggregates Levy funded “Palaeolithic Archaeology of the Sussex/Hampshire Coastal Corridor”, the “Medway Valley Palaeolithic Project” run by Dr. Francis Wenban-Smith and the “Transition Zone Mapping Project” that attempts to examine the problems and procedures of linking on- and off-shore Pleistocene and Holocene deposits. I am also active in the field of developer funded contract archaeology and provides specialist geoarchaeological services to clients such as the Oxford Archaeology, Wessex Archaeology, English Heritage, Natural England, Gifford and Partners Engineering, E.ON, BP and others.
