Journal of Medieval Monastic Studies

The Journal of Medieval Monastic Studies seeks to fill a gap in current journal provision.

We anticipate this to be an annual publication of international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed articles on issues related to medieval monastic history. It will include scholarly contributions on monastic history, archaeology and architectural history, art history, literature, etc.

We are keen to make this a comprehensive publication, covering all of medieval Europe in geographical terms. We also anticipate including relevant book reviews and shorter notices. While the focus is bound to be on Christian monasticism, the journal will welcome contributions on other religions as well.

The language of publication will be English, but abstracts in the original language of individual contributions may be included. Great emphasis will be on interdisciplinarity and internationality. The 20 members of the editorial board include experts in history, archaeology, art history, and theology, covering all of medieval Europe.

Enquiries about the submission of articles may be addressed to one of the general editors: Professor Janet Burton, School of Archaeology, History and Anthropology, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Lampeter Campus, SA48 7ED, UK (j.burton@tsd.ac.uk), or  Dr Karen Stöber, Grup de Recerca consolidat en Estudis Medievals ‘Espai, Poder i Cultura’, Universitat de Lleida, Facultat de Lletres, Plaça Víctor Siurana 1, 25003 Lleida, Catalunya, Spain (karen.stober@historia.udl.cat).

Articles should be between 5000 and 8000 words in length, inclusive of notes and bibliography, and should be submitted in MS Word format. The house style is that of the MHRA, which may be accessed at: http://www.mhra.org.uk/Publications/Books/StyleGuide/download.shtml).

It is also useful to consult the Brepols Stylesheet (including a condensed version of MHRA style), at

All articles are peer reviewed anonymously.
